Hair loss

    Everyone loses hair every day.

It is normal to lose about 50-100 hairs every day. If you started to observe some bald patches or lots of thinning, you may be experiencing hair loss.

Hair loss can happen at any age and for a number of reasons. Women may notice hair loss after giving birth. People under extreme stress can see noticeable hair loss. Some diseases and medical treatments (such as taking too much Vitamin A) can also cause hair loss. The most common cause of hair loss is a medical condition called hereditary hair loss. Other names for this type of hair loss are:

  • Male-pattern baldness

  • Female-pattern baldness

  • Androgenetic alopecia
  • Patients who suffer from hair loss is recommended to take an active role to manage their condition as early as possible to slow down the rate of hair loss. Do meet your dermatologist to diagnose your hair loss and start the right treatment.

    Medical Therapy for Hair Loss

Medical therapies are useful in the prevention and treatment of most male pattern hair loss cases, especially in earlier stages of the balding process.

Oral Finasteride and Topical Minoxidil solution/foam

      Spironolactone:

Spironolactone has anti-androgenic affects and thus it has been used in the treatment of hair loss in women. It is a weak competitive inhibitor of the binding of androgens to their cellular receptors and decreases the synthesis of testosterone. Studies showed that it can slow down hair loss in women and it has to be used under your dermatologist's supervision as it can elevate the blood levels of potassium.

      Low-Level Laser Therapy (LLLT)

Low-Level Laser Therapy is useful for hair loss in both men and in women whose hair is thinning. LLLT can be used safely in conjunction with other medications. These low-level laser devices appear to be safe and have been FDA approved for the treatment of androgenetic hair loss.

      Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) Treatment

Platelet rich plasma (PRP) is concentrated blood plasma which contains approximately three to five times the number of platelets found in normal circulating blood. In addition to the platelets, it contains growth factors and other bioactive proteins that helps hair growth and wound healing. PRP is used to reverse miniaturization, the process that leads to common baldness. It can stimulate the growth of hair follicles, thereby reversing the hair miniaturization (thinning hair) seen in androgenic alopecia. PRP offers an additional way to stimulate hair growth, especially in female patients who cannot use other forms of treatment. Treatment can be done within 45 minutes in a simple clinic visit, results are usually seen after 6 months (varies from patients).
